How the World Works Syllabus

Course Description: This course will explore the forces of globalization and how they affect the sovereignty of nations and the lives of individuals. How the World Works addresses four main topics: (1) Peace One Day (2)Cultural Beliefs and Values (How do cultural values and beliefs affect international issues, globalization, and sovereignty?) (3) Migration (What are the factors that affect movement of people from country to country? What are the effects of these movements?) (4) Global Economy and Environment (Is the global economy good for the world, sovereign countries and for individuals? What are the major environmental issues and how is the global economy linked to the global environment?) (5) Global Security (How do we respond to the issues of terrorism, nuclear proliferation, and food security?) Issues addressed in this course will be examined by looking at global case studies (other countries), historical case studies, and local case studies (impact on nearby communities and individuals). The process of deliberation and United Nations procedures will guide this study. The Eleventh Grade Project, which is an International Studies Academy requirement, is a main component of this course (see attached description). Goals: Students will complete work to - *develop critical and civic judgment *analyze issues through historical, global, and local case studies *develop an understanding of global and national policies and be able to deliberate and recommend policies for various issues *consider multiple perspectives, question, and think critically about an issue *conduct meaningful research based on thoughtful inquiry *communicate their thoughts through both discussion and writing *work cooperatively *take action on an issue of their choice *gain skills and experience necessary for the required International Studies Academy Senior Project |

Resources: Other required readings and video viewings are from primary sources, magazines, internet and other texts Library Website: [email protected] Late Work/Make-up: All assignments will be submitted on time. All projects and major assignments submitted late will receive 5 points deduction per day for five school days. Projects and major assignments submitted after that will not be eligible to receive any credit. Test and quizzes can be made up only if you have an excused absence and the teacher will determine the make-up time. No homework will be accepted late. Grading System Projects/Exhibitions 30% Work Habits (Do Now, Participation) 10% Written Work 10% Quizzes/Tests 10% Classwork and Homework 20% Oral Participation 20% Important! The grade level project for grade 11 is 20% of the final cumulative grade for this course.
